Money is rarely just about money.
It is about stress.
It is about shame.
It is about freedom.
It is about control.
It is about whether you sleep at night.
And I know that because I have lived both sides of the story.
Before COVID, I owned a multi-million dollar accounting firm. We owned commercial real estate. On paper, we were stable. Established. Successful.
Then the bank called one of our loans with no notice. On what they called a technicality.
We had documentation. We could prove they were wrong. But we did not have the money to fight it. We could not afford the legal battle. We could not find a lawyer willing to take it on in a way we could manage.
So instead of fighting, we took the hit and did our best to survive.
We sold our firm.
We eventually found a buyer for our building, but at a significant loss.
We liquidated our savings.
We sold our personal home.
We went from multi-million dollar assets to staring at what was actually in our bank account and asking, “How long can this last?”
That season stripped everything back to the basics.
We lived on weekly budgets.
We tracked every dollar.
We prioritized like our life depended on it.
We cut what did not matter.
We focused on what did.
We rebuilt slowly.
Deliberately.
Without drama.
Three and a half years later, we are homeowners again.
Our savings are rebuilt.
We have launched a new business.
We are stronger, smarter, and far more grounded than before.
And the system that carried us through is now the foundation of everything I teach.
It is called the SPEND Framework.
SPEND stands for:
S - See Where It Goes
P - Prioritize What Matters
E- Eliminate What Does Not
N - Navigate Debt and Savings
D - Develop New Habits
This is not theory.
This is not motivational fluff.
This is survival turned into a practical structure everyone can use.
It is what we used when we had almost nothing left.
It is what we still use today.
Life by the Cents is where I teach it openly.
